Smithsonian Death March

Mom arrived in one piece last night and came along to watch a rugby practice and hang out with the gang at Titan last night. We even brought the dog, who survived her first gay bar experience. But she's already expressed her anxiety in the form of a little wet spot on my carpet, dammit.

Today we headed down to the U.S. Botanic Garden which was nicely free of huge tourist mobs, at least for a Friday. I believe this shit is b.a.n.a.n.a.s.:

Here's Mom:

After that we did a quick jaunt through the Smithsonian Castle's Enid Haupt gardens and the awesome Hokusai exhibit at the Sackler Gallery. Definitely worth a visit.

Tomorrow mom will see her first rugby match, but the weather promises to be cool and rainy. Later on in the week we may see the azalea blossoms at the U.S. Botanical Gardens.

I always go to the Botanical Gardens. I heart the orchid room.

A happy welcome to Jimbo's Mom!

Death March? Oh, please. We all know you're jonesing to see the first ladies gowns, Julia's kitchen, the ruby slippers and the Hope Diamond again. And please, on behalf of the Smithsonian staff, stopping asking to try things on. It's not going happen . . . even if you could get back down to a size 29 jean.

Many years ago, a Washington old-timer told me that when he was a kid, he used to climb the banana tree at the botanical gardens. And the fruit was sweet...

When does the corpse flower bloom again? Now THAT would be something.

Is it possible that's a Traveller Palm, rather than a banana?

Of course, I like the Gwen reference much better, and I can't think of any songs that mention Traveller Palms.

I do believe the first pic is a traveler palm. We've got bananas in the back yard, although too soon to start fruiting yet. I also have a banana in my pants. ;-)
