rainy rugby day

Bridge over the Delaware River
Today we traveled to Cherry Hill, NJ to play South Jersey in the Philadelphia metro area. The morning started balmy and rainy then turned chilly, windy and rainy - all day. It wasn't much fun for those on the sidelines or on the pitch, and when I got my chance to play my hands numbed up immediately. In six years of rugby games it was probably the yuckiest match ever. But we did need an entire day of rain in the area as it's been dry as a bone up until this week.

On the way to the match I spotted a stadium where the Aberdeen Ironbirds play, a feeder team for the Baltimore Orioles. Like the Delmarva Shorebirds and Missoula Ospreys, I love oddly-named minor league baseball teams. The Ironbirds' mascot is Ferrous, a sentient jet plane, and Sherman Shorebird & Ollie Osprey for the other two.

How did the Nationals end up with such a retarded mascot, a 6'2" tall eagle chick named "Screech"? I always thought the DC team should have been named the Washington Monuments, with a big granite titan as their mascot. Tougher than a baby eagle, hands down. Even a terrapin is cooler and ornerier than something named "Screech".

I wonder what oddly-named minor-league baseball feeder teams will sprout up around the area to support the Nats?

If I remember my Saved by the Bell days, Screech was pretty damned ornery.

My favorite minor league team affiliated with the Nats is the Savannah Sand Gnats
