big gay rugby tourney in nyc this weekend

Hey Big Gay Rugby Fans:

Here's the deal for the Big Gay East Coast Rugby Tournament stuff for this weekend in NYC:

Saturday, Nov. 13 from 9am to 4pmish: Big East Coast Gay Rugby Tourney - Randall’s Island, New York, on fields (pitches) 17 and 20. I have no idea where that is.

A social will follow the tourney at the Eagle around 5pm. It will be fun, I can guarantee. The gay teams from Philly, DC, Boston, Toronto, Atlanta and of course NYC will be there.

This will be my last hurrah with rugby, I'm done with it after this weekend. I am losing enthusiasm for it, and I am also tired of feeling like grampaw on Sundays. That and I'm counting my blessings that I can still run and bike and gambol through the forests without a permanent limp.

Randall's Island is in the East River, between Harlem and Queens. You can get to it by a pedestrian bridge up around 103rd Street. By car, go up to 125th Street, then over the Triborough Bridge, which has an exit for Randall's. No train, but an MTA bus goes there, but infrequently. I used to play g-a-y softball over there. Randall's Island is where the Poor House *and* the Nut House used to be. Oh, and I think the Cirque de Soleil tents were there too, last summer.

Joe - The poor house and nut house were/are on what is now Roosevelt Island (formerly Blackwell Island, formerly Welfare Island)

My high school used to use the stadium on Randall's Island back in the mid-70's for Phys. Ed. Dunno why we landed up there of all places but I recall how decrepit it was at the time.

Lee, both islands were used for poor houses and nut houses.
