gay marriage movement consultant tips
I can't find one goddamn link to a copy of AshleeGate on any of y'alls queer blogs. I missed it on SNL. Being an owner of the original Milli Vanilli album on vinyl, I have a vested interest in lip-synch revelations. That, and only one queen seemed to recognize my Mommie Dearest reference from last week. I am very disappointed. Pink Cards revoked until December - all of you except for Sparky.
We have beaten the same-sex marriage issue to a bloody pulp in class. Last night we had our presentations on the issue, analyzing the rhetoric of it as a social movement. Although those of us in class come from all walks of life (Chinese lesbian, Japanese woman, black civil rights studies students from Baylor and Howard Universities, and a big Lincoln-Douglas debate geek) we keep coming to the same conclusions. These are not demands, but suggestions - we're just sayin':
- The same-sex marriage movement may actually be the counter-movement, with the anti-same-sex marriage forces being the actual movement. We believe the same-sex marriage issue was institutionalized and on its way already, and the antis are the ones moving to reverse the direction of progress on the issue. This goes against the typical liberal movement normally classified as the movement. Interesting.
- The conservatives and the religious forces were the ones who brought it up. The issue is big now because it was used as a wedge tool by the Bush for President campaign. This may actually backfire on the Republicans. Heh heh.
- A sole set of talking points must be used...too many messages are going out. The media cannot be trusted to represent the movement, as they show only controversial or shocking image fragments. Emphasize fairness (rights obtained thru marriage) in the talking points.
- The same-sex marriage issue institutions are too disparate. A single governing, unifying organization should be chosen.
- A charismatic, symbolic leader (Gandhi, MLK, Dave from Wendy's, etc.) for the movement would be nice, but is unlikely to be produced.
- A symbolic, representative event or pseudoevent must occur or be produced (Matthew Shephard, Rosa Parks incident, Kent State, etc.) to give energy to the movement. The queers are actually quite limp-dicked about the issue, and of concern for their rights overall. There has been very little actual activism.
