you go you big 'ol queen

YOU GO QUEEN!!! Read on about the announcement Queen Elizabeth II made today. I don't know what it means politically, but it's great to see someone in power having the jewels to bring up the subject of same-sex couple rights. Obviously they aren't as hysterical about such things over the pond. Perhaps some of you readers can comment on what it actually means in their political system.

Queen speaks of same-sex couple rights

Queen Elizabeth II of England opened Parliament on Wednesday by announcing that MPs will debate the issue of civil partnerships for same-sex couples in the coming session.

Queen Elizabeth II of England opened Parliament on Wednesday by announcing that MPs will debate the issue of civil partnerships for same-sex couples in the coming session.

In her annual speech, in which she outlines the key bills from the government, the queen said the bill would help increase social justice across England and Wales.

"My government will maintain its commitment to increased equality and social justice by bringing forward legislation on the registration of civil partnerships between same-sex couples," she told the House of Lords.

I think it's great that Britain is going to debate and most likely enact some sort of civil marriage, however, the Queen just reads the speech handed to her. It's not really her opinion or her handiwork.

Personally I think that once the other nations of the world begin to accept and honour same gender marriages that this country will still be stuborn and headstrong in its unacceptance of such a concept.

As someone who will be "walking down aisle" in less than a year. I think it is ridiculous that the Gov't can dictate what two consenting adult like Rob and myself on how we want to spend the rest of our lives, and what we want to call each other.

As far as Iam concerned, once We take our vows, I will be his husband and he will be my husband, Gov't be damned.

Indeed, her speech is written for her by "her government", ie. speech-writers for Tony Blair and the Labour government...but...but... so what, it's a great step in the right direction, and with such a high-profile nation making these steps, others will surely follow.

even if GB, and all the other countries of the world put out gay marriage, or whatever you want to call it, the US will still hold out against change. we are now the ONLY NATO country to discharge our troops for beign gay, yet we do nothing about it. at least under this Thief, US will not bow to pressure by outside governments, be it for war, peace, or equaility of it's people.
