salary judo

This morning I went to jury duty, but was not called to serve on a jury at this point. I also argued to delay my service, as the ball seems to be rolling for this job at the University of Maryland and I didn't want to be caught in an 18-week long trial after accepting a job. UMD called three of my references yesterday, and I was called by their HR person today to start salary discussions. It all points to a good thing, and the only thing I'm worried about at this point is that I shot too high with my salary request. However, I added a caveat that my former salary history was in the private sector, and that I was aware that university salaries are a bit lower.

According to MSN Careers, "When calculating your salary, remember to include the value of benefits, such as bonuses, commissions, health insurance, flexible spending accounts, profit sharing, paid vacation and stock offerings. If a potential employer asks how much you make in your current position, you can honestly say, "My total compensation is..." and then give them the figure that includes everything."

You may not have shot too high when you take all of that into consideration.
