cape hatteras
The drive down to Cape Hatteras was a little longer than expected, made longer by a side trip to the Great Dismal Swamp. Gurl and I would have been consumed by hornet-sized mosquitoes had it not have been for the good graces of a granola couple who loaned us their bug spray. We managed to see some skinks, cypress trees and lots of butterflies.
We made it to the beachouse, which had a lovely view of the Atlantic, where we were able to spot dolphins and lots of shorebirds, including willets, pelicans and sandpipers. Our lovely hostess Melissa let me use her surfboard, but the waves didn't allow for too much practice. While out in the surf I got real close to a pelican and even a jellyfish. I stayed clear of the stingers of course. It was a wonderful, but short, way to wind down the summer.

You get my vote for the woofiest guy in a wet T-shirt for 2003.
