I saw something really unusual at Titan’s RAMROD last night: a container of free condoms. It was unusual because I haven’t seen that sort of thing offered since like the late ’90s. Back inna day, it was a frequent phenomenon in gay bars in the early 90’s when I came out – when people seemed to give a shit about prevention rather than putting all our eggs in the cure/meds basket as we do these days. In the past 5-10 years I’ve actually had to go out and BUY condoms.

It’s not that I’m against a cure, but the reality is at this moment there is no cure, and meds are no cakewalk either. So in the mean time you can do well to keep from getting HIV.

So I am glad to see the return of the condom – because from what I see around me today young and old gays alike seem to have given up on simply trying to avoid HIV infection. It seems like it’s been far easier for the community as a whole to just throw up their hands and take the infection – and the pharmecutical companies appreciate that attitude by the way. “Barebacking is cool! I’m not giving up barebacking!” Remember: certain industries like it when they can get us to buy more meds. So if you don’t want Tha Man to get even richer, stay Negative if possible.

Crocs + UggsI don’t know what happened to the funds or the will to continue promoting HIV prevention, but it has decreased in the past decade. Perhaps conservative or liberal politics may be part of the problem, I don’t know. Krazy Konservative Kristians (KKK) don’t want to talk about buttsex, and extreme liberals in San Francisco would rather insist it’s a person’s RIGHT to get infected – after a healing drum circle of course.

In other HIV/AIDS news, I was surprised to read about the Patient Zero story about the infected flight attendant from San Francisco is wrong, and that HIV may have entered the country far earlier than previously thought.

And then there’s this plague on humanity – some evil geneticist crossbred Crocs with Uggs for the new fall fashion lineup. When will the madness stop? Believe me – people will be wearing them on K Street during a snowstorm this winter, even though the holes let the slush through to your toes.

Someone needs to come up with an AZT for Crocks.

despite being nailed for his abstinence position, Bush 2 has dramatically increased AIDS funding in Africa, I’m not sure if that was at the cost of decreasing it here. I know that blacks are significantly more likely to carry it than whites now and rates were holding steady but seem to be ticking up. Not sure if that’s from population growth, sex trends, or a change in demographics. It’s possible that they are just better at catching people with it but that seems unlikely considering most people still don’t get tested. Youngins are smarter about dating so it’s possible that the reduction in anonymous sex will slowly drain the pool of candidates.

Bummer. I thought the picture of the Crocs was leading up to a rubber joke. I guess they’re enough of a joke by themselves.

We evil geneticists will be using our transgenic crocs to achieve our goal of world domination. Next up: little individual fruit labels on each piece in the 2 lb box of Godiva chocolates. Bwahahaha. Remember, resistance is futile.

Although I’ve known for a few years that the Patient Zero/Dugas situation was debunked I just heard on a news report a couple of days ago that AIDS dates back to the 30’s!
Luckily, out here SAAF (Southern AZ AIDS Foundation) has been providing free condoms and dental dams to the bars and the glbt center for a few years now.

I dunno.. I would never, ever trust a condom I got free at some bar, especially if it was in a container like a large bowl or jar.
You dont know how long they have been there, if they have been exposed to extreme temperatures or if someone tampered withthem.
I have always bought mine.. always will.

I am going to dissagree with you on this one. I work for the Pharmaceutical Industry.
We inthe “industry” make more money on research and development than actual selling of the drugs most of the time. Plus the liability insurance is uber expensive.
Besides, if one of the compnaies did find a cure, they would be the saviour of humanity. Which given the egos of scientists is more important than any amount of cash
Also I think there isnt enough out there in the “gay community” to promote responisbility. But that is another conversation for another time.
But I do agree withyou in regards to Croc’Ugg hybrids
    they are ugly and nasty

I have several HIV positive friends/family members and I have to say that doing everything possible to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS is paramount. I’m surprised all bars, not just gay bars, don’t offer condoms. I was in SF over the summer and was pretty surprised about how casual people were about having a livable but such a quality of life affecting illness. That being said I haven’t ever gone out in the gay scene in DC, so it could be the same way. Maybe it’s time for a bit of activism in DC…

Just an FYI – Dunno about the ones at the bars in the city I live in but I work/volunteer at the local glbt center and know we go through those quite quickly.
