you lazy bloggers snap out of it and start writing
I think Facebook is killing traditional blogging. Between status updates and the ease of posting photos and links, Facebook is really just an easier, annotated form of blogging. The status update thingy does encourage conciseness in writing, which is a good thing I guess.
I'm not sad about it, but I could occasionally use more diversions in the day, and traditional blogging does involve greater writing skills than just a tagline. And writing longer entries does elicit more thought in the reader's mind. I have been disappointed with all you lazy former bloggers who have not had anything to say for weeks. I know, I know: we're all depressed from the winter. So am I, but if everyone would stop being so insular and self-absorbed in our misery we might all cheer up communally.
Manhattan Offender: While no one was watching, all the blogs died.
I'm debating whether or not to keep certain friends on Facebook who I don't really know, who launder all their daily drama in their status updates. I don't really need to know how you messed up your relationship today. Save that for your close friends. Or maybe I need to delve deeper into the whole friends categorization option to sort these friends into a "no retarded updates about your adventures in serial monogamy" category or something. I don't usually add people I haven't met, as I don't want daily updates from people I don't really know.
For those of you who follow the politics of Turkmenistan, there's a new riveting documentary about it. Shoe clearance sale here. Birds of North America at NatGeo (thanks to former blogger Chrisafer for that one). Cute scruffy guy wrestles catfish.

I'm working on it. Meantime, I embedded an entire episode of "Wonder Woman" to keep people entertained.
Daily drama on Facebook statuses? No way. I can't imagine that!
"Traditional Blogging", I love that :) Is that blogging with a mother and father and 2.5 kids? I prefer non-traditional blogging I think, the kind with 3 daddies and a king-size bed. ;)
And yes, Facebook is creating many problems, perhaps more than it's solving, but then I've been on a tirade about writing all day so it need not continue here. You've summed it up perfectly already.
So here's to traditional blogging, may the gays not fuck that up too.
I couldn't agree more about facebook killing blogging. I find with facebook the more I use it the less I like it. Its connecting me with people I didn't keep as friends (usually for good reason) and flooding me with all sorts of spam info about them I never ever wanted to know.
At first all the ease of use was intoxicating but now I would rather do up a blog post than add to the unwanted relationship spam that floods facebook.
Give it a few years and it will fade away as social networking sites all do. I bet blogging lasts much longer than it does.
"traditional blogging" as seen in the use of content management systems utilized in a journal format. Yes, much of that has changed.
I think the key with Facebook is avoiding it altogether and using it sparingly. Otherwise it's like bad street crack.
I must be swimming upstream or something, but I'm thinking of dumping Facebook and just concentrating on my blog and Flickr.
I'm becoming very sick of Facebook. I find myself skimming it and thinking (mostly), who the hell cares?
I agree on the FaceBook friends list. I need to decrease my internet foot print anyway. I'm about to pare mine down and get rid of friends of friends of friends who I really don't know and will most likely never meet. Unless they're really hot.
I'm insanely jealous about the NatGeo exhibit - I want to see it really bad but I just don't think I can swing getting up there before it's over. Hope you enjoy the hell out of it!

J.P., I am with you.
OK, point taken, Jimbo. Since one of the things I used blogging for (unfortunately) was to vent, at least some times. Once I stopped that... FB status was all I had, I guess. I think I'm taking it back to the blog where everyone can just skip it.
What we - you - were doing was traditional blogging. No other resource allowed a mode of communication like this. Also, long writing (er... within limits I tend to break) was encouraged.
Friendster wasn't really all there and Myspace was a frakking disaster area, so there was no competition.
Fb is the first to offer something similar. But, it's true, quick hits are the prime force there.
It's possible I'll have to finally pay for therapy, leave the "blogging" to the porn guys and keep contacts with FB.
Be careful "Un-friending", I have heard horror stories about people being accosted on the street by people they removed... people are nuts.
I have facebook but I use it to 'feel' connected to people I do know. I hardly ever log on.
I hope my plumbing adventures made for some good reading, even if only for half a minute. I feel a bit unmotivated lately.
I am fairly new to Facebook and so far I'm unimpressed. Mostly I've been friended by co-workers who apparently lead very boring lives. Regardless, my blog is currently "on hiatus" for personal reasons unrelated to Facebook.
Thank you Jimbo for expressing my exact sentiments. It's time we plant our foots up lazy blogger's asses. And don't give me crap about, "Well, I don't get paid for this!" (WHORE)
I was just about to write another bitchy email to that cute little guy in purple... but I held off. Thanks for doing the job for me. He's been served! Snap. Snap.

Agreed on all counts. Also guilty on all counts. I'll be back this weekend. Really. I mean it this time. Promise. Maybe.
I agree...I noticed a considerable drop in entries on LiveJournal with folks defecting to FB...just another example of the "get in, get off, get out" quickie mentality of impermanance these days, I suppose! I agree its fashion will eventually fade and some other trendy venue will take its place.
I will respond to this bitchy post on Facebook. See you there!
Wait ... I just started using Facebook. Ohio is so 20 minutes ago.
I've totally noticed the lack of blogging. I also blame twitter.
Agree on all counts about facebook and who would put anything personal in their status update for their high school friends to read? Also loving the scruffy catfish guy.
One of the reasons we've all been sucked in my FB is that it's coded so much better than our blogs. I'd love to be able to post my random bits, links, etc. to my blog as easily as I can to my FB page. And I wish that my readers could comment as easily. Well, mine can comment rather easily, but with all the java wonder that they can on FB.
(And I must say, Jimbo, that this OpenID thing sucks. It's supposed to make it easier, but I just spent 10 minutes trying to login with it -- and I have accounts with Technorati and Flickr -- and it wouldn't work.)
Anyhoo, my resistance to FB is coming in this form: Every time I get tagged on a FB meme, I post it on my blog, which then imports to my FB page. I also keep my Twitter feed, which is synced with my FB feed, on my blog page, so that I can hit three birds with one stone. I'm looking for add-ins that allow me to post links, etc. onto my blog the way that the "share" button for FB works. Let me know if anyone has one...
