I want to give a shout-out for the gays in California who have married or are concerned about their freedom to be recognized by the State of California as a couple. Proposition 8 threatens to rewrite their state constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

I encourage all of my California readers to vote No on Proposition 8. Those of you with friends or relatives in California, share these thoughts and encourage them to vote the same. For you California voters, please remember that the propositions are located towards the bottom (or end, if electronic) of the ballot, so don't stop at the big names at the top!

If you're out of state or just want to support the No on 8 campaign, you can donate here or volunteer with the No on 8 campaign.

While the image of a same-sex pair in a wedding ceremony may be frightening to some, I think most people would vote in favor of supporting a same-sex couple's relationship - that is allowing the relationship to be recognized in a favorable way in regards to shared health benefits, tax credits for couples, and the ability to be able to visit your partner in the hospital. Most of my readers are probably in favor of this too, but I think it was important to say a few words about it. There are many gay couples in California and across the country who have been in long-term relationships that should be recognized by the state and the nation, with the same benefits that heterosexuals get from their legal agreement or partnership. These people pay taxes, are productive members of society and should be recognized as such by their state and nation.

I sent the No on 8 and the No on 102 (Arizona) campaigns money because I'm still hoping Mr. Right will come along and propose and I'd sure like a big fancy wedding.

Don't forget people: It's not just about the benefits of marriage, it's also about the responsibilities as well.

As one-half of one of the couples directly impacted by this nonsense, thank you. My wedding and reception were two of the best days of my life, and while the h8ers can't take away my love for my husband, they can certainly make our life together much more difficult.

Sending money, working phone banks and training the dog to pee on the opposition signs are all getting old though - I just want this election to be over.

Hey Jimbo. Just wanted to say thanks for posting this about Prop 8. I hope people remember Prop 8 is not a proposition to stop rights from being bestowed here in California. It's a proposition that would strip people of their existing rights. Thousands of gay and lesbian California families have been joined in marriage, and this proposition would declare those marriages, and all the legal rights and emotional bonds that go with them, null and void.

But beyond that, and to me perhaps most importantly, this initiative has been striking a darker tone here in California that speaks to a racial-style prejudice.

Again, much obliged for your post, Jimbo.

...a very appreciative California reader...

I've seen a few postings on LDS blogs that they plan to distribute YES ON 8 literature to kids TOMORROW ON HALLOWEEN. Please see this before voting on Prop 8!

They claim they want to isolate and insulate kids, and now millions of California kids will be returning home to ask mom and dad about "sodomy" or whatever propaganda the mormons plan to distribute. I'm working on a response to this that I'm hoping I can get to "go viral" tonight. Moms are pretty good about spreading Halloween horror stories via email.

I'm also amused at how many "YES ON 8" folks have their Halloween plans on their blogs and webpages. Apparently, glorifying Satan is A-OK, but allowing your neighbors to live in peace even if you disagree with them isn't. Some "religion!"
